Humulene
Humulene gives cannabis one of the freshest aromas and flavors. Its aroma is described as spicy, herbaceous, and floral. It is reminiscent of hops and fresh-cut herbs. Hops are the plants that give beer its bitter taste, and in cannabis strains containing humulene, a beer-like scent can be detected. The humulene terpene creates an earthy, musky, and woody essence. It is naturally found in various vegetation such as tobacco, hops, sunflowers, ginger, sage, ginseng, basil, and cloves.
This terpene is not as abundantly found in cannabis strains. However, humulene is found in higher concentrations in strains that also happen to have high concentrations of beta-caryophyllene. These two terpenes have similar chemical structures and work synergistically to enhance therapeutic benefit.
Humulene shows great benefits for an extensive range of medical ailments. It is carcinopreventive (kills cancer cells), antitumor (fights tumor growth), analgesic (reduces pain and sensitivity), anti-bacterial (works against staph bacteria), antifungal (prevents fungal growth), anti-inflammatory (reduces inflammation), antioxidant (decreases oxidative stress), and anti-diabetic (improves blood sugar control). When paired with beta-caryophyllene, humulene is very effective at suppressing appetite. Humulene is also believed to stimulate creativity and increase mental relaxation.
Common strains containing humulene: Death Star, Durban Poison, Original Glue, White Widow
